Description
Charles Lehr was one of America's most highly respected scene painters during the 19th century ; his training as a dioramist in the 1830s is evident in this sketch from Harper's Weekly of a scene he created for a production of The Jewess, a melodrama produced in 1853 at the Boston Museum. (The heroine was, of course, saved from the boiling cauldron at the finale.) As was customary at that time, the set consisted of an elaborately painted backdrop, in front of which were placed the props and functional scenery
