The left half of this stereoview was used as the frontispiece for Two Rivulets, where it is captioned by Whitman, "Photo'd from life, Sept., '72, Brooklyn, N.Y., by G.F.E. Pearsall, Fulton St." Copies of this photograph were later made by Charles H. Spieler.

This photo has often been dated around 1869, but Pearsall's Fulton St. gallery is not listed in directories until 1872, and the similarity of this photograph to other Pearsall photographs of Whitman suggests they may have all been taken in one sitting. The Library of Congress copy is dated on the back in unknown hand, 1870.
