Title:
Dinner Dress
Author:
Jeanne Button and Stephen Sbarge
Date:
ca. 1877
Description:
From Changing Fashions. Silver blue and pale peach striped silk was pleated, puffed, knotted, looped, twisted and draped to confect this dinner dress. Further elaboration was added in the form of gold silk taffeta ruching, machine-made lace, silk tulle, gold-beaded buttons, and frosted-glass baubles...This dress also illustrates the eclectic taste of the late Victorians. Neckline, sleeve length and cuff treatment are based on mid-eighteenth century models, the design of the skirt on the late seventeenth century examples, and the slashed sleeves on sixteenth century garments
