notes:
Image title from marginal gloss. Marguerit e de Roberval, niece [?] of Jean-François de la Rocque de Roberval, was abandoned by her uncle on the Isle des Demons [perhaps Fogo Island or Quirpon Island off the coast of Newfoundland] for having fallen in love with a lower class man while they sailed from France to Canada to establish a colony. The colonists had set out in 1542 and were to have been guided by Jacques Cartier who, however, abandoned them. Roberval was appointed Lieutenant General of Canada. Text states that Marguerite's lover and servant were with her on the island, but they and her baby died, leaving her alone to be rescued by Breton fishermen two years and five months after their abandonment.
