Boscawen was promoted to Vice Admiral of the Blue in 1755 and given command of a squadron whose orders were to intercept all French reinforcements being sent to America. In 1758 he, with General Amherst who led the land forces, took the fortress of Louisbourg and the island of Cape Breton.
