notes:
The map purports to show the "Riviere Longue" (perhaps the Minnesota River) flowing from the Rocky Mountains into the Mississippi River. Lahontan traveled throughout Canada in service for the military in New France. His account of his travels was enormously popular, and his misconceptions about the geography of the Great Lakes region continued to be replicated throughout the eighteenth century.
